Hike a Hawaii Arboretum

Seventy years ago, an amateur botanist, D.T. Fleming, had a passion for plants from all around the world. He bought them to Maui and planted them high in the West Maui Mountains in the upper reaches of today’s Kapalua resort.

Maunalei Arboretum is like a secret garden at the end of a rutted road that winds through Kapalua’ pineapples fields. Hikers walk under big leafy canopies to view prehistoric moa ferns, a bo tree said to be a relative of the one Buddha meditated under, New Zealand Kauri trees and any number of Hawaiian plants.

In all, the walk is about 2 miles up to about 2,600 feet, but it’s easy enough. According to hike masters Adam Quinn and Jason Latas, they’ve escorted an 88-year-old around the verdant loop. A healthy continental breakfast is included in the $70 fee, a portion of which benefits the Kapalua Nature Society.

Hikes are offered by Maui Eco-Adventures, Latatudes ‘N Adatudes, with passenger pickup from selected hotels, including The Ritz Carlton, Kapalua where the guided tours originate. Arrangements can be made at the hotel activity desks or by phoning (877) 661-7720.
